We are now living in a world where pollution is adversely affecting everything in nature, and we’re seeing terrible effects like acid rain and global warming. It would be marvelous if we could live on this remarkable planet without destroying it in the process. For city-dwellers it might look like a tantalizing mirage to think of inhaling cool, clean air into their lungs, with no harmful poisons or toxins. We’re already paying the price, though, for the contamination we keep generating; the environment and our physical well-being is being made vulnerable by the air’s toxicity. Our vast oceans, which make up the majority of the earth’s surface, are being poisoned by pollutants, mainly toxins and oil, which have a devastating impact on the life found in the ocean and as a result of that it affects us. For many people who earned a living from the sea as fishermen they no longer have a job because of pollution. Since way back in time, fishing has fed and given economic means to a substantial portion of our population, all of which is currently being taken from many. Still fresh in our memories is the Deep water Horizon oil leak, which gave abundant testimony to the disastrous consequences of oil spills, causing the loss of many jobs and costing billions of dollars. The food chain and the whole of the ecosystem experienced serious damage, as a direct consequence of the deaths of large numbers of not only fish but also birds. All because of humans and their desire for oil, with virtually no thought, except in hindsight, for Mother Earth and her many other children. As the world’s known oil reserves near exhaustion, billions are pumped into exploration for new fields, money which could be used to expand and develop green energy production. The prospect of providing considerable amounts of green energy is huge, without harming the environment. One would think it’s a no-brainer, given the possibilities offered by green energy alternatives, along with their being passive towards the environment. As long as the sun shines, solar panels, for instance, can heat water and supply electricity as well. Another green energy source is wind turbines, that turn energy contained in wind to electricity. The plus side of wind turbines is they work 24/7, assuming there is adequate wind. The time to put into practice an aggressive green energy program is now, given the environmental damage caused by oil, and the limited supply thereof. Perhaps then we can halt or perhaps even reverse the terrible effects of global warming and pollution. It is us that are going to benefit in the short term and future generations will benefit in the long term. We desire for our children to grow up surrounded by all the magnificence the earth is blessed with, happy and without fear of violent, distressing weather events and food shortages.
